Oliver Dunn

Georgetown is full of adorable stores that I never visit.  I love DC and my fatal flaw is that I don't explore enough. Recently, I've decided I'm replacing the slipcovers on my couch.  I love my couches:  they're comfy and seat a lot of people.  I'm less enthralled with the color. Hence the hunt for new slipcovers.  Currently, they're rust.  I want grey.  The only store that sells the type of slipcovers for my couch in DC is Oliver Dunn in Georgetown.   It's adorable.  It's full of trinkets like jewelry, glass wares, and desk accessories. There's also loads of antiques which are fantastic on a whole other level.   The most interesting fact is that there's 3 co-owners in one store.  That's why it has 3 names.  The store was originally opened by Jackie Dunn 19 years ago. When Jackie was pregnant with her second child, she was placed on bed rest for several months. That's how Moss & Co. and Catherine Roberts became involved. The collaboration of the three makes an eclectic, interesting spot for home furnishings....

bandelero, bandelero…

Before you read any further, you should be singing "bandelero, bandelero" to the beat of "bamboleo" by the Gipsy Kings in your head.  It will enhance the post greatly.  I promise. Bandelero, Mike Isabella's modern Mexican restaurant in Georgetown, is a rootin' tootin' good time.   Decorated in a Day of the Dead theme, it's dark, intimate and loud.  On the night we went, it was also hot as hades as the AC was out.  Thankfully, the food and drinks made up for the swamp ass. I went with my husband and two friends.  We proceed to sample a wide variety of the menu.  Everything we ate was fantastic.  Our favorite dishes were the suckling pig tacos with apple and habanero mustard and the lobster tacos with corn, tomato and basil.  Are you looking at those photos?  It was just as delicious as it looks.  Another highlight was the margaritas.  The El Banderlero, which was espolon blanco tequila, patron citronage, lime, blood orange and a GM float, is on tap. That could be dangerous.  It was definitely yummy. The only negatives were the opressive heat due to the AC outage, the stink of sewage as you entered because there was no AC and the blaring 90's rock. Regardless, I'd go back in heart beat.     photos by Greg Powers.  layout by...

rue travel issue

Have you read the new issue of Rue?  The June/July issue is always dedicated to travel and in this issue, they've featured homes in Sweden, Paris and Malaysia. The photo above is from a flat in Paris and I'm smitten.  I bet you know why: marble counter tops, grey cabinents and that over the top light fixture.  The entire place is fantastic and makes me want to go to Paris right now.  Enjoy!   photos Pierre Verger for Rue...

art alert: lauren adams

Recently, I was flipping through a West Elm catalog and I noticed an interesting abstract painting.  I love that West Elm features independent artists from Esty. The artist was West Virginian Lauren Adams and I was instantly intrigued.     Both of are parents are from WV and they hold any artist/artisan from WV in high regard.  When I saw this water color that was inspired by a WV Spring morning, I knew it'd be a perfect gift for my Mom.  In fact, it's a perfect gift for anyone because it's an original piece of art for $25.  It's not big but my Mom has a gallery wall where it would fit beautifully.   Lauren has a variety of paintings, both large and small, that are captivating.   Check out her shop on Etsy and add your own piece of original art to your home.  ...
