nopa kitchen + bar

Last weekend, my husband and I went to Nopa Kitchen + Bar in Penn Quarter. Nopa is the latest restaurant in Ashok Bajaj's restaurant empire.  Since Rasika and Bibiana (also part of his group) are two of my favorite DC restaurants, I was eager to give Nopa whirl. Nopa did not disappoint.  Advertised as an "American brassiere", the menu focuses on classics like steaks and burgers. However, it takes the approach a little further and also offers a number of seafood dishes, raw bar items, charcuterie, savory snacks and heirloom vegetable sides. Everything we ate was delicous.  The twice fried chicken is a stand out and so was the rockfish entree.  It's definitely a place we'll add to our regular rotation....

neighborhood guide | adams morgan

Adams Morgan is a neighborhood you love to hate.  On the weekends, it's inundated with pleasure seekers and littered with the remnants of giant pizza slices. During the week, it's full of locals ready to enjoy a little peace and quiet.  I lived in Adams Morgan for my first nine (gah..where has time gone?) years in DC and I loved it. Over the last few years, the landscape has changed.  DC Gov recently revamped 18th St. and it has a clean, modern look.  With it's proximity to the Metro and the National Zoo, it's still one of the most popular 'hoods in NW. SHOP at Skynear Designs and And Beige.   These two stores couldn't be more dissimilar.  Skynear is a riot of colorful, modern furniture.  And Beige is…beige but in the best possible way.  I fully expected to hate the store (I'm not a beige person) but it's full of beautiful furniture and accessories.  You'll never look at beige the same way. EAT at The Diner and Mintwood.  The Diner will always hold a special spot in my heart.  I worked there part time the first years I lived in DC. It was a great way to meet people as a DC newbie.  The food is basic but good. They make the best pancakes in town and they're open 24 hours.  Mintwood is a new and welcome addition to Adams Morgan.  They serve contemporary American food and it's delicious. DRINK at The Black Squirrel and Jack Rose.  The Black Squirrel is the bar you want in every neighborhood. It's cozy, has a kick ass beer list and great service. Jack Rose is known for it's extensive whiskey list (over 1000) but it also serves yummy food and cocktails....

feelin’ frantic

I'm having one of those crazy mornings and I don't have time to write a cool post. I had one planned. I was mid sentence when I realized..it's not happening.  I was up till 11 working an offer and back at it today at 6am. One of my sellers is in Shanghai.  A 12 hour time difference makes an interesting transaction..but it's happening. That's all that matters.  Oh and by the way..I'm off to San Francisco for the 4th of July.  Like how I slipped that into the conversation? It's to counteract my crazy morning.  It's a girls trip and I can't &*#$ wait.  June has not been a fun month. Bank fraud.  Car crap. Had to put my cat to sleep.  I'm ready for some entertainment.  ...

sushi taro

Sushi Taro is the best sushi in DC.  My husband and I have been regulars for years and we enjoy lunch there at least once a month.  It's my husband's go to place when he needs a sushi fix.   Personally, I'm not an adventurous sushi diner.  My first sushi experience was in a small town in Georgia on the way back from the Masters.  It was not good and it scarred me.  I only eat rolls and over the years, I've eaten lots of fish that wasn't fresh.  I can happily state that's never occurred at Sushi Taro.  You can tell from the photos which is my meal and which is my husband's.  This particular day, he enjoyed a ramen special and a bara chirashi (chef's choice) set.  I stuck to my spicy tuna and yellow tail rolls.  As always, it was delicious!  Sushi Taro 1503 17th St, NW Washington, DC  hours: lunch 11-2 Mon-Fri  dinner 5:30-10...

happy father’s day!

When I think of my Dad, I always think of him in the kitchen.  He loves to cook and was the chef at our family restaurants.  This photo is from our outdoor kitchen (better known as the deck) in the back of the house two Christmas Eve's ago.  This is where all the magic happens on Christmas Eve:  fried squid, whiting, frittae along with a lot of drinking and trash talkin'.  The rest of us hang around, waiting for the food to emerge so we can grab the first bites.   It's a good day. To my Dad: the chef, attorney, doctor, car salesman and all around bad ass..have a wonderful Father's Day.  I love you mucho!  Smooches....

father’s day gift guide

With all the nonsense at the beginning of the week, I almost forgot it was Father's Day this weekend!  Luckily, I ordered my Dad's gift last week.   My Dad loves a good bottle of bourbon and Jefferson is his new favorite.  His golf game can always use a little help and this golf laser rangefinder should do the trick.  Dad likes to look sharp and he's handsome in purple..especially purple gingham.  Last but not least, a jambox wireless speaker is perfect for listening to the Aretha station on Pandora while hangin' on the front porch at the beach....
